Abandoned pets never get over the loss of their family. Many pets, after being diagnosed as terminally ill are discarded to spare their family of their miserable end. Their loved ones may find solace in the belief that the animal must have miraculously recovered and is living somewhere. But reality may not be even close. In addition to the trauma of being away from home and in strange surroundings, the pet faces starvation, aggression from street animals, exposure, infections and eventually a slow & painful death. Some of them get rescued and make it to the Rescue Centers or homes. But, they rarely recover from their emotional trauma. Condemning a terminally ill animal that cannot take care of itself to the streets is an act of absolute cruelty. Further, when you do it to an animal that has loved, trusted and served you for a lifetime, it is ultimate betrayal.

Help Stranded Pets

Stranded pets, especially dogs form a major fraction of the homeless street animals. Look closely at the stray dogs in the city and you will see that there are quite a lot of pedigreed or mixed breed dogs which were once pets. They end up in the street as a result of abandoning or getting lost. PFA gets many calls from the public reporting sightings of lost pet animals wandering in the city. We rescue all the animals that come to our notice, yet there might be more out on the streets. A little effort put in by every animal lover can go a long way in helping homeless animals. Unlike street animals, a pet can never lead a good life without man’s help. Rescuing a stranded pet dog is mostly easier than a feral dog. Breeds such as Labradors and Great Danes are mostly friendly and obedient despite their size. If you see a wandering pet, secure it and report it to us immediately. If you cannot, follow the animal’s movements till we take over. If you do not wish to foster the animal till it is returned home, we will make alternate arrangements for its care.

Help a Lost Pet

If you rescued a lost pet, email us the photo of the animal, its description, the locality and circumstances under which you found it and your contact details. The photo and details will be posted on our social networking site. When the owner gets in touch with us, we will contact you.

Find Your Missing Pet

If your pet is missing, email us the detailed description of the animal (breed, colour, collar, identification marks, locality and circumstances under which it went missing), its photo(s) and your contact details. If the description tallies with any animal rescued by us, we will call you. Further, the photos will be uploaded in our social networking sites till we get a response. A pet will be handed over only if PFA is satisfied with the proof of ownership.

Responsible Pet Ownership

Your responsibility for your pet extends far beyond providing food, water and shelter for the animal. Even if you undertake a pet offering a life-time commitment, circumstances may arise when it may have to be cared by a stranger. When it comes to rehoming, a friendly, well behaved animal has far more chance than a fierce and aggressive one. Right from the start, mentor your pet such that you have an affectionate, trusting animal; that can be easily cared for.

  • Select a pet suitable to your home, lifestyle and family members. Do not let impulsive decisions, immediate joy, current trends or social standing be the selection criteria.
  • Research the temperament and behaviour of the animal. Have the pet only if you can deal with the cons as the escalating negatives may lead to the animal being given away. Reach a decision based on the stature of the adult animal and not the baby.
  • Keep your pet secure and contained in your premises. Curiosity may tempt even the most faithful pet to wander around and eventually get lost.
  • Socialise your pet well. Teach it to mingle and accept care from people.
  • Groom your pet regularly. Get it used to being handled.
  • Vaccinate and sterilize your pet.
  • Vaccinate and de-worm your pet as scheduled. Maintain records for the same.
  • Get your pet accustomed to vet visits, body exams and medication right from a young age. Being compliant to medical treatment will have a positive impact on its health and well being.
  • Impart basic obedience training.
  • Discourage aggressive behaviour towards people or other animals.
  • Socialise your pet with other pets. Dogs and cats that get on well with each other can easily blend in another home with pets. They also get the added luxury of freedom in an animal shelter or pet hostel.
  • Monitor your pet’s health closely for any sign of discomfort or illness. Most diseases are easily cured if diagnosed early enough.
  • Be there to help your pet through the fag end of its life. Consult your veterinarian and give your companion your best and an easy passing.
